Safety of Veracruz.
Veracruz is one of the more unsafe areas in Mexico. I wouldn’t recommend taking family vacations here unless you’re utilizing the services of a travel specialist whom is VERY familiar with this area. And, by very familiar, I mean someone who has been to the area within the past 6-12 months. The following quote from a local explains a lot.
“I mistrust everyone. I’m careful what I say on my cellphone. I constantly check to see if anyone is following me. I almost never go out at night.” —Miguel Ángel Díaz
There are certainly areas that are unsafe, but that is changing. It’s changing the same way the safety issues all over Mexico are changing. Increased policing, increased road checkpoints, increased watchful eyes and community involvement.

Veracruz, The City.
Veracruz is a beautiful city on the Gulf of Mexico 750 or so miles South of Corpus Christi, Texas. There are very nice and beautiful resorts that rival the luxury of the more popular Mexican Rivieras around Cancun and Puerto Vallarta and for a fraction of the price. There are a lot of really fun and exciting things to do in Veracruz. There’s an amazing aquarium, the huge flea market, a pretty good sized waterpark and plenty of museums and historical sights. And, the beaches are nice too!
